With GSM phones getting ever smaller, they are increasingly being used in areas where they are forbidden. This technology is also becoming the preferred medium for bugs and other surveillance devices.
To combat these problems, Esoteric has worked with a manufacturer to develop the multi-purpose GSM196 mobile phone detector, designed to detect and locate the presence of unauthorised mobile phones.
Advanced band-selection filtering coupled to unique signal-detection algorithms and easy-to-use displays gives unprecedented sensitivity and selectivity for this type of equipment.
The GSM196 can detect both 2G (GSM900 & GSM1800) and 3G (WCDMA / UMTS 2100) mobile phones. For situations where greater accuracy is required and / or specific monitoring is required in areas containing multiple phones, a specially designed directional antenna system, the SA918-196, can be used with the GSM196.
Using the GSM196 Mobile Phone Detector
The Handheld mode allows the operator to walk around checking for the presence of mobile phones. The Level bar-graph display shows the strongest signal detected and helps to guide the operator to its source. Static mode is used to detect the presence of mobiles for later analysis. The detector can be left unattended, overnight for example, for anlysis the following morning.
The GSM196 detector can be operated in cadenced vibrate or silent mode.
Two sensitivity ranges are provided. On “High” range, the detection range will be as much as 300m (in free space, for mobiles on full power), allowing for entire cell blocks of prisons to be swept for example. “Low” range is used to pinpoint a phone’s location more accurately. The range switch allows the sensitivity to be set in advance according to the building’s construction (thicker walls mean more shielding of signals).
The GSM196 distinguishes between Network signals, 2G and 3G calls on the Type indicator.
